Welcome to the Through The Thorns Tour 2022 in downtown Columbia , SC . We open the show with metal-core band Hollow Front from Grand Rapids , Michigan . They started their set off with the second track “Comatose” off of their latest release “The Price Of Dreaming” which was released in May of this year. The screams of vocalist Tyler Tate matched really well with the cleans of Dakota (guitarist/vocals) . This was my first time witnessing this band live as they are fairly young in the music scene (Est. 2016) compared to their touring mates. Hollow Front’s catchy singalong choruses and heavy punches, make this group a must hear! Their set consisted of all new songs from their album which was nice to give you a taste of their current sound .

Hollow Front Set List

  • Comastose
  • Heritage
  • Treading Water
  • Self- Sabotage
  • Changeling
  • The Price Of Dreaming

We Came As Romans

Next up we have a very familiar metalcore band, We Came As Romans. Since their inception back in the mid 2000’s , they have been a very go to name for someone that has listened to the Metalcore genre this long such as I have. Regrettably , this is the first time I have seen the band without late clean vocalist Kyle. WCAR opened with newer track “Darkbloom” (2021) that will be featured on their first full length album without vocalist Kyle. David Stephens (lead vocals) really steps up to the plate doing cleans/screams from older tracks to new songs. We can really see that Dave has really evolved as a musician . WCAR played a handful of fan favorites such as “Hope” , “Tracing Back Roots”, and “Lost In The Moment” from their last album . Dave stopped the show to dedicate his memory of late bandmate Kyle, to play “Carry The Weight” . Despite the somber mood and tone of their set, the band has really risen from the sadness and are stronger than ever.  Dave announced that their sixth album will be released on October 14th of this year.

August Burns Red

For the headliner, we have legendary band August Burns Red who have been making music since 2003. Spanning eight albums now, they had a huge crowd to please . They started their set off with their popular cover of Chop Suey (System Of A Down) and flowed into their newest song, Vengeance (Released last year as a new single) . This heavy hitting set was a sampler platter from all eight of their albums including “Backburner” , “Ghosts”, “Meddler” and the track that arguably put them on the radar (Composure) . For those that may not know, this was kind of like a hometown show for vocalist Jake Luhrs since he began his dream in Columbia, SC. It was Jake’s first time performing in Columbia since 2008. The stakes were high with multiple family members and childhood friends there to witness an amazing set full of 16 non stop energy filled tracks. We even saw an appearance from Nascar’s very own, Bubba Wallace. He was there helping drummer (Matt Greiner) go nuts on his kit . After performing the last song “Composure” , the band came out and announced that we would be getting three encore songs . August Burns Red is currently working on their 9th release via Sharptone Records with no current date for release at the moment.
