LISTEN: SOTP #57: Cory Brandan (Norma Jean/Hundred Suns)

What a great episode this week. While I am used to interacting and talking to bands of all sizes, certain ones still get me hyped up and nervous in the best way. We got to have a very awesome conversation with Cory Brandan of Norma Jean, which is a very influential band in the scene, and his new band along with that Hundred Suns.

Vocal Styles Between Both Bands + Determining What To Write For Two Bands

We discussed his vocal style right off the bat and whether or not the new band was built to support his melodic singing. Though that may not have been the case, it came down to the writing process between the two bands in terms of what he does vocally.

Cory discusses how when Norma Jean was writing ‘Polar Similar’, he was also writing for Hundred Suns. He did tell us that when it comes to one band or the other, certain lyrical aspects are given to each one. Listen to hear his in depth detailed answer to how he writes for each bands.

Starting A New Band In 2017 Despite Being In Norma Jean A Whole Career

Being in Norma Jean for so many years, Cory has seen the industry change a ton. Minus the obvious technology updates and social media, how does a seasoned career frontman get a new band off the ground for the first time with this new environment? Listen to his perspective on how he is doing it and what a band really is.

‘Amaranthine’ Song Meaning + Human Trafficking Cause

In both the intro to the show and the interview, I stumbled over this name not knowing how to say it. Though a bit humorous, the content isn’t. The song is a deep one about the tragic industry that is human trafficking, and the benefits from the sales of this single goes to THORN in which he explains uses technology and software to help track down traffickers. On partnering, if mentions that writing and talking does nothing without action.

Where Is Hundred Suns Going?

With Norma Jean and Hundred Suns being big projects, what is the goal for Hundred Suns? He states that after this tour Hundred Suns is going to go back to writing. Norma Jean is also writing but they write at a slower pace. He does mention something I said earlier in the interview about what having two bands can do for the other, listen to hear what that is!
