I’ve been listening to Blitzkid for a long time, so whenever they put out something new, I’m probably going to be a little biased. These are songs I grew up with. They’ve been part of my music collection for years, and there’s just something really cool about getting to hear a band you listened to growing up still putting out new music. That’s pretty much how I felt listening to “Beast or Man?”
This is the second single from Blitzkid’s upcoming album Modern Hel, coming out September 25, and I’ve got to say, this one has been stuck on repeat for the 3 hours it’s been live on YouTube.
The first thing that hit me was just how much it sounds like Blitzkid. The guitars have that gritty, dirty punk sound, the vocals have that familiar edge, and the whole thing has that darker horror-punk feeling that made me fall in love with the band in the first place. But at the same time, it doesn’t feel like they’re just going back and trying to recreate something they did 20 years ago. I really appreciate that.
There’s a lot of nostalgia that comes with listening to Blitzkid for me, but “Beast or Man?” doesn’t rely on nostalgia to work. It’s just a fun fucking song. It’s catchy, it’s dark, it moves, and it makes you want to turn the volume up. That’s honestly what I want from a Blitzkid song.
I also love that the band still knows how to make horror punk feel fun. There’s obviously a darker side to the music, but it never feels like they’re taking themselves too seriously. There’s still that punk energy underneath everything that makes you want to throw it on while driving around, blast it through some shitty speakers, or hear it live with a crowd going completely nuts.
For someone who grew up listening to this band, hearing something new from Blitzkid in 2026 is kind of surreal in the best way. There’s something really satisfying about finding a band that was such a big part of your younger years and realizing you still get that same feeling when a new song comes on. “Beast or Man?” definitely gives me that feeling.
If this is the kind of energy Modern Hel is bringing, September 25 can’t get here fast enough. I’m ready to hear the whole thing. Until then, I’ll probably be playing “Beast or Man?” way more than I should (god help my wife). Blitzkid is still fucking Blitzkid, and honestly, that’s a pretty damn good thing.
