DELAIN is turning up the heat with its new single, “We Are Fire,” and if this is any indication of what the band’s next chapter will sound like, metal fans have plenty to be excited about.
The song kicks off with a cool, hard-hitting bass riff that immediately grabs your attention. From there, the guitars, drums, and keyboards come together to create a powerful wall of sound. This is the kind of music that reminds you why symphonic metal is such an exciting genre when everything comes together.
But there is something different happening with DELAIN this time around.
Following the departure of vocalist Diana Leah, founder and keyboardist Martijn Westerholt has decided to take the band in a new direction, bringing in a rotating collection of talented vocalists rather than replacing her with one permanent singer. “We Are Fire” introduces that approach with of Eluveitie, Noa Gruman of Scardust, and Paolo Ribaldini sharing vocal duties.
And what a combination!
The mixture of voices works incredibly well with the music. The female vocals bring melody, beauty, and power, while the male vocals add another dimension that keeps the song interesting from beginning to end. Each vocalist brings something different to the table without making the song feel overcrowded. Instead, everything flows together naturally.
DELAIN is carrying the torch for symphonic and power metal, delivering the kind of soaring melodies, heavy instrumentation, and theatrical atmosphere that fans of the genre love.
The accompanying music video is just as impressive as the song itself.
One of the first things that caught my attention was the eye-catching, futuristic black dress worn by one of the female vocalists. The band’s appearance, stage setting, and overall presentation give the video a dramatic, almost otherworldly feel.
And then there is the fire!
There are plenty of pyrotechnics throughout the video as the musicians perform, creating some seriously cool visuals. The lighting, flames, and overall aesthetics complement the intensity of the music beautifully.
One of my favorite moments comes when the male vocalist screams, “I am fire!” Just as those words come roaring through the speakers, the flames erupt into a massive display. That combination of music and visuals is absolutely killer.

The production is polished, the musicianship is excellent, and the vocal performances give the song an identity of its own. Rather than simply continuing with the familiar formula, DELAIN is experimenting with something new while maintaining the sound that made the band successful.
The group has also announced an impressive collection of future collaborators, including Marko Hietala, Sharon den Adel, Anneke van Giersbergen, and several others. That makes this new musical direction even more intriguing.
“We Are Fire” is an appropriate title for a band entering a new era. There is energy, passion, and plenty of musical fire burning throughout this track.
If you enjoy powerful vocals, thunderous bass, outstanding musicianship, and a music video loaded with flames, this one deserves a spot on your playlist.
