Some bands have a sound that is instantly recognizable, and Staind is one of them. The moment Aaron Lewis opens his mouth, you know exactly who you’re listening to. That unmistakable voice has been a defining part of hard rock for decades, and with their latest single, “Ghosts,” Staind proves they’re still capable of delivering the kind of hard rock radio hits that made them household names.
“Ghosts” marks the band’s first new music since their 2023 album Confessions of the Fallen, and it’s a welcome return.
The song opens with a thick, chugging guitar riff from Mike Mushok, immediately establishing that familiar Staind atmosphere. Johnny April lays down a deep, steady bass line while Sal Giancarelli keeps everything moving with a powerful drumbeat. Together, they create a heavy yet melodic foundation that allows Lewis to do what he does best.
There’s something about Lewis’ vocal delivery that makes even the simplest lines carry emotional weight. His ability to move between melodic singing and aggressive screams remains one of the band’s greatest strengths.
One of the song’s standout moments comes when Lewis screams, “Ghosts that I’ve never found.” It’s perfectly placed, providing an explosive burst of emotion that kicks the song up another notch. Rather than screaming simply for the sake of being heavy, he uses it to emphasize the emotion behind the lyrics. It’s exactly what the song needs at that moment.
Lyrically, “Ghosts” explores memories, loss, and the struggle to escape things that continue to haunt us. It’s familiar territory for Staind, but that’s part of what makes this track work. The band has always excelled at turning personal struggles into songs listeners can connect with.
The accompanying music video adds another layer to the experience. It opens with a man sitting on a couch watching an old television filled with static, immediately creating an unsettling atmosphere. The band performs inside a dark, smoky warehouse, with the industrial surroundings complementing the song’s emotional intensity.
As the video unfolds, the imagery creates a mysterious, almost surreal feeling. By the end, the appearance of a man lying in bed makes you wonder whether everything you’ve just watched was actually a dream. It’s an interesting touch that gives the viewer something to think about after the music stops.
I do have one complaint about the video presentation. The lyrics appearing on the screen through YouTube’s captioning don’t consistently match what’s actually being sung. It’s distracting, especially for viewers trying to follow the words. The video team should pay closer attention to caption accuracy rather than leaving viewers with incorrect lyrics.
That issue aside, “Ghosts” is another strong addition to Staind’s catalog. It delivers the signature guitar work, emotional vocals, memorable melodies, and heavier moments that longtime fans have come to expect.
With the band celebrating the 25th anniversary of Break the Cycle and preparing for another round of touring in 2027, it’s encouraging to hear that they’re not simply relying on their past accomplishments.
Staind is still writing new music, still delivering hard rock radio hits, and still sounding unmistakably like Staind.
“Ghosts” is another reminder of why this band has remained relevant for so many years.
