Thrash metal legends Flotsam and Jetsam are back with another bruising dose of old school aggression on “The Edge of Nowhere,” the third and final single from their new album, Rats in the Temple, released August 28 through Napalm Records.
Calling Flotsam and Jetsam metal legends is not an exaggeration. After more than four decades, the band still sounds hungry, and “The Edge of Nowhere” is proof that age has done nothing to soften their attack.
The song wastes little time getting your attention. An ominous opening creates tension before Michael Gilbert and Steve Conley let the guitars loose. I love the guitar work here. It is fast, aggressive, and completely in your face. This is the kind of thrash that can leave you with a black eye and a punch in the teeth.
Then there are the drums.
Ken Mary hits like a sledgehammer throughout the track. His playing gives the song an additional level of force without getting in the way of those relentless riffs. Alongside bassist Bill Bodily, the rhythm section keeps everything charging forward while the guitars rip through the track.
Frontman Eric “A.K.” Knutson sounds as commanding as ever. His unmistakable voice fits perfectly over the speed and heaviness of the song, especially as the track builds toward its memorable chorus.
Knutson explained that “The Edge of Nowhere” is about knowing when to stand your ground and keep pushing when life gets difficult. That attitude matches the music perfectly. There is nothing passive about this song. It sounds determined.
“The Edge of Nowhere” also works as a strong final preview of Rats in the Temple. The new album is Flotsam and Jetsam’s first release through Napalm Records and follows 2024’s I Am the Weapon. If this track is any indication, the band is not interested in simply leaning on a legendary catalog that includes albums such as Doomsday for the Deceiver and No Place for Disgrace.
They are still here to make new music that hits hard.
Fast guitars, crushing drums, soaring vocals, and enough aggression to remind everyone exactly who Flotsam and Jetsam are. More than forty years into their career, these absolute metal legends can still deliver a serious thrash metal beating.
