A Skylit Drive – “Half Hearted” Review

A Skylit Drive are proving they are far from finished. Their new single, “Half Hearted,” kicks off another chapter for the veteran post-hardcore band and serves as the first taste of their upcoming album, Ashes, due in early 2027 through their new home, Vaux Records.

One thing I immediately appreciate is that A Skylit Drive gave this song a real music video. Performance-driven music videos are something that feels increasingly missing from the music world, especially in heavy music, and it is great seeing bands continue to put the effort into giving fans something visual to go along with a new song.

Musically, “Half Hearted” has plenty of what longtime fans are looking for. The song balances melody with aggression, while some cool breakdowns and well-placed screams give it the heavier edge it needs. Michael Jagmin’s vocals continue to be one of the most recognizable parts of the band’s sound, and the contrast between the melodic sections and harsher moments works extremely well.

Jagmin described “Half Hearted” as a defining song for the upcoming album and said writing it became a cathartic process that felt like confronting something within themselves and putting it into words. The track also marked the beginning of the band’s collaboration with co-writer and producer Ryan Furlott.

Production is another major piece of the equation. Ashes is being made with Ryan Furlott and Joey Sturgis, whose production work has helped shape plenty of modern metalcore over the years. That polished heaviness can already be heard on “Half Hearted.”

The single also arrives alongside the announcement that A Skylit Drive have signed with Vaux Records, the independent label founded by Craig Ericson, founder of Rise Records. Considering the band’s history within the post-hardcore scene, there is an interesting connection there as they move into this next era.

“Half Hearted” is a strong reminder that A Skylit Drive are not done making good music. They still know how to combine memorable melodies, screams, breakdowns and a polished post-hardcore sound without losing their identity. If this is the first indication of what Ashes will sound like, there is plenty of reason to look forward to hearing what comes next.
