Zach Top’s latest single, “Good Times & Tan Lines,” has officially arrived, and I’ve got to admit, I can’t stop listening to it. The song was first teased during a VIP soundcheck back in April, and after a high-energy performance at CMA Fest 2025, Top surprise-dropped the track to kick off the summer. It’s the first taste of his upcoming album, Ain’t In It For My Health, and if this is the direction he’s headed, we’re in for an interesting ride.
There’s a lot to love about this song. It’s catchy, warm, and just about tailor-made for lake days, tailgates, and late nights around a fire. The title tells you everything you need to know; this one’s about soaking up sun and chasing the simple joys. From the very first guitar riff, “Good Times & Tan Lines” gives a strong nod to that classic ‘90s country vibe that Zach has really made his own. It reminds me a lot of Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee,” not just in sound but in spirit. The twangy guitars, upbeat rhythm, and carefree energy bring back that familiar, feel-good style that’s been missing from mainstream country for a while.
That’s part of why I love Zach Top so much. He understands what makes traditional country music so enduring and fun. His voice, his style, his songwriting, it all feels rooted in something real. And with this song, he brings that charm front and center once again.
But if I’m being honest, there’s a small part of me that’s a little hesitant about where this could be going. “Good Times & Tan Lines” dips into a more beachy, easy-breezy kind of vibe that’s more Kenny Chesney or Jimmy Buffett than I usually go for. The lyrics lean into tropical imagery, and the overall mood flirts with that sunburned, saltwater escapism that doesn’t always resonate with fans of harder-edged, honky-tonk country.
To be clear, I still love the song. I’ve played it on loop and will probably keep doing so all summer. But I do hope this is more of a one-off moment rather than a full shift in style. Zach has teased another track called “Flip Flop” recently, so it’s possible his new album might lean heavier into that beach-friendly sound. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially if he keeps the traditional instrumentation and keeps his voice front and center. Still, part of me still clings to the barstool ballads and boot-stomping anthems that helped put him on the map.
What’s great is that, even with the Buffett and Chesney shades, Zach Top still manages to stay true to himself. The production keeps the core country elements intact, and his vocals are as strong and genuine as ever. He makes the song feel authentic, even if the theme isn’t entirely my thing. That’s a tough balance to strike, and he pulls it off.
With Ain’t In It For My Health set to drop on August 29, “Good Times & Tan Lines” sets the tone for an album that might explore some new sonic territory. As long as Zach keeps his roots in the mix, I’m on board. I’ll be the first to admit that, even if I’m not a huge fan of the flip-flop-and-coconut-drink country lane, this song is still going on my summer playlist. It’s fun, well-crafted, and full of personality. It’s the kind of song you reach for when the sun’s out and the beer’s cold.
So yeah, even if it leans a little too close to the beach for my taste, I still can’t help but love it.
