Paris Luna Live At Southern Tracks Studio
By: Lou Raimondi
Paris Luna is a veteran of the Georgia Music scene. They’ve played on the same bill as Sheryl Crow, Uncle Cracker, Drivin’ & Cryin’, and Lonestar to name a few. They also played quite a few special events and festivals including a preconcert party for Kenny Chesney & Tim McGraw at the Georgia Dome, South by Southwest, and most recently Rock by The Sea on St. George Island. However, this night was different from many others. It was lead singer and songwriter Heather Russell’s birthday. Heather, (whose stage name is the namesake of the band Paris Luna), celebrated by recording a live vinyl album
titled Brasstown Ball, with her band, at the world renown Southern Tracks Studio. A gathering of family, friends and a few reps from the music industry served as the live audience. They were rewarded with great music, drinks by Vixen Vodka and food by Atlanta’s Ormsby’s Restaurant! And what a party it was!
For those of you unfamiliar with Southern Tracks, this is where legendary producer Brendan O’Brien recorded for nearly 20 years. According to the studios website, the Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Train, and the Black Crowes have all recorded there. Upon entering the studio, and listening to the band tune up, you can see why. The studio is not only spacious, it has incredible acoustics. A perfect setting for a live recording.
The band opened with the popular uptempo tune “Southern Girl” followed by “Boots & Bangles” both off the “Between The Ditches” EP. “Tell Me Why” off the “City LIghts” CD preceded their new single “Heart Like Mine” which drew an enthusiastic response from the audience. “Kane’s Song” which is a song Paris had written for her husband and drummer Kane Russell followed. Her ode to our Military “My America” was followed by “Lately” and a dedication to Blaze Foley “Rainbows & Ridges” preceded the final two songs. For “January Still”, Paris gave a captivating performance on piano which featured steel guitarist Jonny Daly. The Flying Burrito Brothers “Christine’s Tune” closed out the set.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the appearance of Benji Shanks on guitar for “Lately”, “Rainbows and Ridges”, and Christine’s Tune”. Benji has played with Government Mule, Widespread Panic and Blackberry Smoke to name a few. I’ve seen Benji play with Barry Waldrep, Blackberry Smoke and Paris Luna and there is a reason he is considered one of the most respected guitar players around. He’s simply on another level.
I’ve covered a lot of concerts and events, and I have to say this was one of the most captivating. An awesome performance of passionate, well written music, with an audience who came to listen. It provided for some special moments that will not soon be forgotten.
