Hardcore is usually synonymous with chuggy breakdowns, and plenty of two-step.Outlier is changing that concept with each new release they put out; with their initial sound being more hardcore, yet now transforming that into something more melodic. Started in San Jose, CA, Outlier has been taking the whole country by storm with tour after tour, constantly grinding. In January 2016 they released two songs (Sequioa/Mecca) which gave a sense of this new sound, largely due in part to the change in vocalists that took place.
This time around Outlier is taking no prisoners, having put in months of work at Nutone Studios in Pittsburg, CA with Scott Goodrich, they’re displaying what it takes to be successful in the music business. In that time they recorded a new album which is to be titled “Through A Set of Rose Shaded Eyes”, releasing through Really Rad Records. With this record they’ll be setting out on a summer tour, which is still to be announced, heading out to the East Coast for their first time.
The single in question (Skinwalker), seems to blend their hardcore roots with an almost Deafheaven-esque sound. While it is a briefly short song, it still gives agood representation to this new sound Outlier seems to be the pioneers of. Not to say others haven’t done similar, but Outlier is executing it in a way that I haven’t seen done. All of the members seem to lock in with each other, not only in the recording but when playing live as well. On that topic, their live show is by far one of the craziest and personal I’ve seen throughout the scene; whether it’s Josh going nuts on bass, Griffin putting every ounce of energy into his screams, Aaron blasting away on the drums, or Adrian making you cry with his simple yet tasteful guitar licks. The band has simply honed in on their craft and done what any professional band has always seemed to do: engaging with the audience and making it an intimate experience. Directed by Ethan Parilla of Atrocious Works Productions(Andrés, Wolf & Bear, Castaway, etc.), the video for Skinwalker is testament for Outlier’s continuous push for quality content.
