For hearing DevilDriver for the first time, I have to give credit where credit is due. The California heavy metal outfit is most definitely not a band to miss. DevilDriver has taken on veterans Whitechapel, Revocation, Carnifex, Rivers of Nihl, and Fit For An Autopsy on the road promoting their latest release, “Winter Kills”. Hitting the stage the illuminating red LED lights would light up the entire venue as they open with “End of the Line”. Fans screamed word for word as vocalist Dez Fafara sang, occasionally hyping everyone up to move, there is no doubt that the band has an exuberant amount of time and energy put forth into their performance as each member shows no strain as they play effortlessly. Attracting all walks of life from teenagers to middle aged rockers and rockettes, there is a sense of comradery in the way that everyone takes care of each other. In the midst of shooting, I would be reminded by security of the crowd surfers which seemed to be flowing over the barricade much like salmon swimming upstream, someone would fall down in the pit and would be instantly be picked up by other concert goer. “Head on to Heartache” played next followed by “Not All Who Wonder Are Lost”. All in all, it was a set filled with a consistent flow of energy and a great display of lighting to compliment their performance.
